I absolutely loved this short story. The lessons it teaches about true Christianity are vibrant and clear. It is slightly reminiscent of "A Christmas Carol", but it differs also in powerful ways. The main character believes he is a good Christian, and feels that he has done much good in the world. He has done much good, but all of it has been calculated to be of benefit to him in this life. He learns through a beautiful Christmas Eve experience that you can receive your rewards on earth, or in heaven, but not in both places.Product details

The Mansion edition by Henry Van Dyke Reference eBooks Reviews
Lest we lose proper perspective for our value in life, reading this will remind us that that what we have and do here is part of a greater plan. Take 30 minutes and read it for yourself.
This is my second time reading "The Mansion" and I'm thinking of making it a holiday tradition. It is a wonderful short story about the true spirit of giving. Definitely a must read!
What counts in heaven is what's truly given during our time on earth. "Lay not up for yourself treasures upon earth. ... But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven." —Matthew 619-21
This is one book I should read at least once a year. Profound. Straight to the gut then up to the heart. Excellent. And it accomplished all that without one F-word. Amazing what beautiful literature can accomplish.
I have read this twice now over the course of 2 months (Nov-Jan 5). Each time it has brought me to think of what I have given to others with pure joy of giving.
I will continue to live modestly and give freely for the blessings I receive from this way of life is immeasurable here on earth. But I can honestly say I am rich in heart.
As you read this book, look at your own life and reflect....change if you feel the need.
Such a great book! I think it's going to be a new family tradition to read this at Christmas time! Beautiful illustrations and educational on what it means to be charitable and loving to your fellow man.
I read "The Mansion" for the first time last year. I immediately felt inspired by the story and wished I had read it years ago. To see that someone had illustrated the story was so exciting. I bought the book as soon as I saw it. The illustrations add to the story and make it so adult and child alike can appreciate the message given. This will be a book I will read yearly at Christmas time.
This book was recommended to me after a Christmas devotional by President Monson. After reading it, and understanding one of the reasons that this book was talked about, I have to say that I really enjoyed the message. It is one of forgetting oneself and focusing on the needs of others, which is something that is often forgotten in this world. It is a simple book, short, and a lot of life's meanings can be found from this.
